Herons grow during the breeding season..

Rare in New Zealand, with a population of just 100–120 birds, the elegant white heron or kōtuku (Egretta alba modesta) is nevertheless common in India, Japan, China and Australia. With a long, slender neck, yellow bill and thin legs, white herons grow to 92 centimetres in length and 900 grams in weight. In flight their long neck is held kinked. During breeding their bill darkens and a veil of fine feathers extends beyond the folded wings and tail, accentuating their graceful profile.

Kakapo are back in the North Island for the first time in a decade, after seven of the rare birds were released on Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf yesterday.

The Department of Conservation moved the flightless and critically endangered native parrots from Codfish and Anchor Islands in Southland.

The department’s Southland kakapo programme manager, Deidre Vercoe Scott, said the four female and four male birds were taken by helicopter to Invercargill, where they boarded a commercial flight to Auckland.

New PEACOCK SPIDER, Maratus harrisi

Peacock Spider Maratus harrisi

A fleck-sized jumping spider resting on a yellow leaf caught the eye of Stuart Harris while on a bushwalk to Boroomba Rocks in Australia’s Namadgi National Park.

A keen amateur photographer, Harris was experimenting with a new macro lens and liked the contrast between the foliage and the spider’s markings.

And, as millions of photographers do in these digital days, he posted the photograph on his Flickr site.

“I though it was an interesting photograph of an unusual spider, and hoped a spider expert might be able to identify it,” he says.

SNOWY WHITE: Mauriora, the second white kiwi chick to hatch at Pukaha Mount Bruce this year.

A white Christmas is being celebrated at a Wairarapa wildlife centre, after the birth of a second rare pure white kiwi.

The rare chick hatched last Sunday in Pukaha Mount Bruce’s kiwi nursery, where Manukura – the world’s first white kiwi hatched in captivity – arrived in May.

Centre manager Kathy Houkamau said staff were “gob-smacked” by the Christmas miracle.

“While every kiwi is precious, to have a second white chick is a delightful gift, especially at this time of year.”

Wetapunga

WETA RELEASE:

DOC scientific advisor Chris Green, speaks to a crowd about the wetapunga release.

WETAPUNGA:

Twenty-five of these endearingly ugly creatures were released on Tiritiri Matangi Island on Saturday in an effort to ensure their survival.

They are arguably New Zealand’s ugliest creatures with maori even naming them “God of ugly things”, but 25 giant wetapunga were the centre of attention for an adoring crowd yesterday as they were released onto pest-free Tiritiri Matangi Island off the Whangaparoa Peninsula.

Frisky Sirocco gets owl for diversion

HEAD CASE: Sirocco, the head-humping kakapo, gets help from American bird expert Barbara Heidenreich at Zealandia.

His frisky antics made him a global internet sensation, but Sirocco’s days of humping human heads could be numbered after a stint of behavioural training.

A stuffed owl, kauri cones and macadamia nuts are among the items in the bag of tricks being used by a specialist American animal trainer who has come to New Zealand specifically to work with the endangered kakapo.

Kiwi Chick Born

Kiwi Chick Born

The Kiwi Husbandry team at Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua has had a sudden flurry of hatches that has them eagerly anticipating the arrival of the 1000th kiwi hatched there.

It has been a busy few days for the team who have had four hatches since Sunday and are now expecting to hatch their milestone kiwi, which is now only three hatchings away, before the end of the week.

Kiwi Husbandry Manager Claire Travers says: “We currently have another four eggs which are in the process of hatching so I am confident that within the week we will reach the 1000th milestone. It’s all happening very quickly.”
